Camels and Sand........

I was awakened this morning by Fall Girl, calling to say she'd received a call from Fly Boy in Kuwait, saying he'd arrived safely.  A few minutes later, he called me with stories of camels and sand!

He said he was running on adrenaline, having just had about an hour and a half sleep, since he wanted to experience it all before heading off to bed.  The time difference between Kuwait and California's time is 11 hours, so he was "hitting the cot" at about 7pm.  He'd had an adventure filled day, watching some of his fellow soldiers riding a camel around the base for 5 bucks a pop!  Then he watched in amazement as the poor camel growled while it was loaded into the back of a pickup with a make-shift hoist by the natives who took their money and headed off in the desert.  He said, "Mom, the animal rights activists would be all over that here!"

Fly Boy said he just couldn't believe how dusty it is, with powdery sand covering everything.  He said that the country has to import sand, since their's is too fine to use in concrete for building purposes!

A born shopper, and always after a bargain, he had already spent some time at the local bazaar where the natives are after the American money with crafts, jewelery, rugs, etc. He said he watched as this woman removed her name tag and she said, "I just removed my name tag and if you can tell me my name, I will give you a prize!"

Scott said to his buddy..."Watch this!"  The buddy said, "You just got here!  How could you know her name?" as he followed Fly Boy to the woman's table.

Fly Boy said to the woman with a big toothy white smile...."Your name is BEAUTIFUL!  Am I right?"

She promptly replied...."You are the WINNER!"

Fly Boy, always one for the ladies...walked away with his prize, which was a handcrafted beaded necklace!

Obviously, she knows a winner when she sees one!

  2. What a wonderful story you tell!  Thank you for sharing!  BEAUTIFUL!  What a hoot!  Thanks for bringing the smile to my face.  I'm glad to hear his spirits are good and he's enjoying the cultural experiences in Kuwait.  Sounds like your son has a good head on his shoulders and good friends too.  Shana
