Incredible Words from an Amazing Young Woman!

Photobucket

Please go to Singing With My Heart and read Heather's most recent, powerful entry in which she writes an open letter to her dreadfully abusive former lover! It's riveting and incredibly moving! This 24 year old woman's strength and wisdom is inspiring!

Please go read it and share it with your followers!

I am still catching my breath!

Ta Da....Some of results from my photo shoot!

I am thrilled with the way my photo shoot went today! I took about 250 shots during the nearly 2 hours we spent at the park! It gave me some confidence that I was sorely lacking and now that I am editing some pretty darn good shots (in my very humble opinion)...I have gained even more confidence-at least in the quality of my composition.

It's was very fun and those children are just so gorgeous, which made my job pretty easy! I swear that they should be models, especially Lissy as she's a real natural beauty and totally at ease with the camera. She's also a very cooperative 5 year old!

Chan is 8 so he's at that stage that he'd rather be playing than doing that dorky stuff like getting his photo taken, but with some bubble gum and the playground equipment at our City Park, he did great!

I stopped at the Dollar Store and bought a variety of fun little props..such as Christmas Hats, Flowers, Bubbles, Bubble Gum, Books, stuffed animals, etc. So, I was able to keep their attention by changing up with the goodies, that they got to keep in the end. I spent about $20 on that stuff, they had fun and I got some great photo experience!

Plus a there was a reward of a box of Sour Gummy Bears to be had by each, for doing a good job! Of course, I checked with Mom ahead of time to ensure it was alright for them to have the candy at the end!

Anyway...I hope you enjoy these shots and I welcome your comments and critique!

Saturday Six and Splat!

Here's the Saturday Six from Patrick's Place, that I haven't done since I was a young whipper-snapper journaler on AOL. Of course, I am doing this as I don't have anything else to do except study for tomorrow's photo shoot and I am procrastinating! So, indulge me, please!

1. What single food on the Thanksgiving dinner menu did you most look forward to?

Turkey! I love fresh, roasted white meat turkey, especially when I don't have to cook it! My hostess did just fine...outstanding actually!

2. What single food was your least favorite?

Like I am going to disrespect anything that I ate at someone else's house! Not on your life! So, I'll just say the carrots, only because I didn't have any as there wasn't enough room on my plate and besides, I filled my veggie spot with her tasty, fresh green beans!

3. How many plates of food did you eat? Did you take the big nap afterwards?

I managed to restrain myself to one plate, with a little extra helping of stuffing as that's my favorite stuff on Thanksgiving! Nope..no nap! Who could sleep through a showing of Twilight?

4. Take the quiz: What holiday food are you?
I am like Remo. I don't do the stupid quiz part.

5. What dessert item did you most enjoy from the big feast? Who made it?

Well, it was some kind of layered Pumpkin, Cream Cheese and Cool Whip concoction on top of a yummy graham cracker crust, made by my loving and lovely hostess and her gorgeous teenage daughter!

6. How many meals of leftovers did you bring home?

Actually, I just brought a plate dinner and desert home for Tam as she didn't feel well enough to join us. She ate the meal and I ate her desert! I thought that was fair!

And...now I will tell you the little story of my spectacular arrival for the big Thanksgiving feast!

I am generally not known for my promptness, so I was rushing up to the house bearing gifts, juggling my purse, camera and a nice bottle of Riesling wine just as the entire family and guests were bowing their heads to say the Blessing! As the host opened the door, which was within inches of the dining room table where everyone was seated, I TRIPPED ON THE THRESHOLD AND FELL FORWARD ON MY KNEES AND ELBOWS, LANDING IN THE ENTRYWAY!

Managing to save the modestly priced bottle of wine during the fall, I looked up to a sea of horrified faces, many of which I had never seen before! I was mortified and somewhat in pain, physically and of course, my pride took a beating as well!

clumsy Pictures, Images and Photos

But, we all had a good laugh and a great meal!

You can just call me Grace!

Now WHAT?

I am all powdered, painted and perfumed and have NOWHERE to go!

It's funny how things work out.......as I was starting to stress about this afternoon's photo shoot, it turns out the Mom needed to postpone everything until tomorrow morning!

Works for me!

Now I get more time to read my new book-the one I mentioned in my previous entry.... and plan my photographic strategy!! Doesn't that sound professional? They say everything goes better with a plan. Right? I am all over it....after this entry. And maybe after Patrick's Weekly questions. But, soon.

So anyway...here I sit looking pretty dern good with absolutely no where to go.

Whattodo, whattodoooooo?! ::drumming fingers on the desktop::

Then, I get brave and make a big girl type decision to give Cave Man a call because he's very sick and all alone in his cave, where he's toughing it out because Cave Men don't do doctors, and the cave, which is two hours North, has a malfunctioning heating system.

Being the kind and caring person I am, I commiserate with him for a minute and then ask if he needs anything, any-thing at all!

While I didn't get specific....I am figuring, since Vampire body temps seem to be on the LOW side, that at the very least he'd like a warm body to lay under a blanket with on the couch. Possibly lay my healing hands on his tummy? Maybe I'd even offer up my neck? :P

But he didn't need a thing!

Photobucket

So, here I sit and that book is calling my name. At least I will be looking good while reading it!

Hmmm. Maybe a self-portrait is in order!

Mama don't get dressed up for nothing!

Photography and Inspiration...

Well today is a bea-u-ti-ful day in the neighborhood!

DAMNIT! Where is a good blizzard when you need it?

I say that because I am now going to have NO EXCUSE other than being SKEERED to get out of taking some outdoor photos of two incredibly gorgeous children of one of Tam's high school friends-THIS AFTERNOON!

While I would love to think of myself as a photographer, just like I would love to think of myself as a writer....my somewhat limited photography skills have been challenged by mostly non-moving subjects, like say...mountains, flowers, large rocks in an ocean scene, like what you see in my header shot-which, by the way morphed into art in post editing.

I am not toooooo experienced with people, but have managed to pull out a few good candid moments like this shot of my incredibly genius Grandson, FlyBoy, Jr. Gorgeous, isn't he? I am sooooo fond of that child! (A quote from the book-The Shack)

It's the silly-kid-photographer-shaking-a-stuffed-animal, cootchie-cooing...say "hippopotamus ignoramus" stuff that I am not sure an ol' prison guard can pull off because she can find it difficult to not be so self-conscious!

So, I figured I could use all the help I can get and yesterday I bought a book at Borders, conveniently entitled, The BetterPhoto Guide to Photographing Children, by Jim Miotke. The cover says it's designed to help "you" get the best possible images! So I have to make this entry quick since I need to go cram for today's photo shoot!

But, before I go, I want to pimp a wonderful blog that I follow; Pictures, Poetry and Prose! Laura Jayne, the blog owner asked me to submit some photos to be considered for "inspirational prompts" on her amazing site! So, I submitted a few, today one of my flower shots is being used as "Colorful Inspiration" in which Laura Jayne asks the writers to:

1. Describe in rich detail the colors in this photo.
2. Create a piece of writing using some/all those descriptions in a unique way.

You really should go see what the writers have written using my photo as inspiration!!! I am soooo humbled and AWEd! I am grateful and honored and very proud! Wow!! Such talent displayed by those writers! Thank you to Laura Jayne and her amazing contributors! I am beaming!

And...I am inspired to go out there and give it my ALL! Even if I do have to say silly stuff like..."Turtle Tortellini!" <---That's two I just made that up! Sometimes I amaze myself! :)

Wish me LUCK!!!

Of Vampires and Dating.........

Okay, so I think I've finally figured out my wild and ancient attraction to the formerly known as "Would-Be Prince Charming" now referred to as my "Cave Man" friend.......who I am soooooo ready to kick to the curb for a geriatric chance with Remo who has now officially entered the online dating pool!

*sigh*

But, if Remo's not willing to drive two hours to Tucson, he sure ain't driving to Californication to take his chances on love or lust with a slightly crazy "older" woman.

*double sigh*

Anyway...I remember now...I've sworn off on-line dating due to the horror I've experienced and I much prefer to fantasize about teen vampires like Edward Cullen in Twilight. I couldn't wait until I finished the book to see the movie, so last night after our Thanksgiving feast, my dinner hostess and I hit the movie theatre for the late showing!

Twilight Pictures, Images and Photos

Oh yeah!

S-i-z-z-l-i-n-g.

As I was sayin' before I got sidetracked by Remo.....I've figured it out! It came to me when I was about 100 pages in to the book...it all came together, just like when Bella put a few clues together and used that ever important Google feature on her computer. It was so very simple, really....considering my investigative nature.

CAVE MAN IS A FREAKIN' VAMPIRE!

Oh for sure!

He talks and writes kind of in that immortal way; somewhat poetic and definitely cryptic at times, and I attempt to seek out the words that I want to think are meant for me in his journals. He can infuriate me with his aloofness and yet I am intensely spellbound. In his presence I find it difficult to stay away from him, as if he is a magnet and I am being pulled into his energy field. Yet, we've only shared a few awkward hugs and he turns nearly to stone. We've only touched accidently and for me, it's been like an electrical storm. (Personal to Cave Man-Okay, so I minimized it! There you have it!)

He looks into my eyes and says..."Stop it, you're doing it again!" without explanation but with a knowing smile!

dazzling me edward cullen twilight series quote Pictures, Images and Photos

I mourn and cry like a puppy torn from it's nursing mother too soon, when I must return home from a visit. He's awakened a part of me that now truly believes in cosmic connections and intense chemical attractions. Just like Edward breathing the intoxicating scent of his beloved Bella, I am drawn to this pale-faced man who prefers to hide in his cave from the "others."

And then on top of it, he recently told me about when we were together at dinner all those years ago..that he just wanted to reach out and touch my neck!

See! MY NECK!! Get it??

my heart Pictures, Images and Photos

It's my own version of Twilight! He's my personal Edward the Vampire and I want to be his Bella!

Forever!

Yep, my love story and I HATE IT!

Damn it!

Happy Thanksgiving!

thanksgiving or happy thanksgiving Pictures, Images and Photos

Well, some of us are happy! There's some kind of trouble in paradise for the young lovers, as evidenced by the loud voices and the door being slammed when I got up this morning....but that's their problem. The door slamming was my problem however, and I did step up to the plate and threaten bodily harm if the leaded glass in my new front door was broken due to someone's little holiday temper tantrum. I am so glad the Wizard gave me the spine that I needed so desperately!

Have I mentioned that I LOVE AL ANON? I have soooo learned to stay outta stuff that ain't my bizness!!!

All of THAT was going on around me and I just sat my happy butt right here at the computer and continued just loving life; anticipating and very thankful for a wonderful home-cooked Thanksgiving meal at someone else's house! And...that the Love Birds had other plans! It doesn't get much better than that!

But, it was a very short night.

Another adventure in our County Emergency Room from about 10 pm until we got back up the mountain and finally home at about 0445 hours...<----cop talk for O'DARK reallllly EARLY!

Tam doesn't doooooo mornings or afternoons, as it interferes with her beauty sleep! So she decided that heading down there at THAT time of night might not be so bad, but then there was that pesky fog to contend with and after a white knuckle ride we pulled into the hospital parking lot unscathed.

The usual freak parade that normally hangs outside the Emergency Room entrance, must have stayed home for the night, but still, we both made an audible gasp seeing how many people were seated inside. Nobody looked tooooo seriously injured or in obvious distress, so I thought maybe we'd actually luck out and not have to wait too long.

After going through Triage, and one slightly abnormal EKG later, she was promptly given a bed and evaluated by the charge nurse. She didn't display the previous "drug-seeking behaviors" probably because she was in too much pain and I think I had totally shamed her by reading her my last blog entry about her rather unflattering dramatics during our last ER episode! I am proud to say she still has a little self-respect!

Anyway...her ultrasound showed that there was still some fluid around her heart and they decided to prescribe Prednisone; a steriod that usually helps get the inflammation under control. After a shot of morphine and the wait for the labs was over, we were free to go!

Practically painless..at least for me, since she was well behaved and I stayed busy and awake by continuing to read Twilight, which could be more delicious than that Thanksgiving dinner that I am anticipating!

YUM!

An unAnniversary.........

Divorce... Pictures, Images and Photos

This time of year always brings back memories of my beautiful Winter wedding; a lifetime ago. If we were still married, we'd be celebrating our 37th anniversary today!

Thirty-seven YEARS! I can't imagine doing anything for that long. Working in a prison for 25 long years is about as close as I can get to comprehending a "partnership" for almost that length of time. And that my friends, was an accomplishment.

I get pretty nostalgic thinking back to when I was an extremely young, beautiful bride of 17; just about a week short of my 18th birthday. It's amazing to think I was just about a year older than Ab is right now. There I was marrying a handsome, 20 year old man, that I don't think I ever really loved in the 'til death do us part' kind of way. That's sad, but the awful truth.

I know now that I really wasn't "in love" with him at all. In fact, I don't think I even thought I was in love with him at the time, as evidenced by a huge fight we had right before the big day, when I threw my engagement ring in a fit of fury. Probably everyone contributed that episode to pre-wedding jitters.

Was I wanting to call the whole thing off? Probably, but I saw no way out. We'd gone too far. Literally. I was pregnant with a child that I would later lose at about 5 months along in the pregnancy. And...he and I paid for every aspect of the wedding by working and saving our money.

So we got married.

Did I grow to love him? Yes. I found that our enmeshment and love grew stronger with those life lessons that we experienced together in the history of that marriage....starting with the miscarriage, the family gatherings and holidays shared, vacations, the marriages, divorces and deaths in our extended families, then the births of our own children and those kids my siblings had borne into the mix.

I still love him in that heartfelt sense. You know..the kind of love that fills our hearts as we become loving, mature adults. I am a loving person, so he's got a place in my heart as the father of my two oldest children and the grandfather of our grandsons.

But, I didn't marry him for love.....rather... I loved the idea that I was being rescued from a home life that I didn't know how to escape otherwise.

I loved the idea of settling in to raise a family in a manner in which I knew I could do so much better than my less than stellar role models.

I loved the idea that I could be settled in a home and never have to be evicted and lose all of our possessions or live without water, or electricity or heat.

I loved the idea of enough food for each and every person in my household to eat! Now that was a nifty little concept!

I loved the idea of a clean, uncluttered home without 6 people shoved into one bedroom. You know...the basics of a simple life.

So as a young married couple, we had all that and more. We became homeowners and invested in a rental home. Us...landlords! It was amazing!

But, what "we" didn't have was trust and quite a few little other things that make for a strong marriage. He was the jealous type, so he didn't trust ME or anyone around ME for a minute. That jealousy and control was eventually all consuming and suffocating us both. I didn't understand jealousy then and I still don't.

I had trust, because anyone who demonstrated their love in that manner, must really love me, I naively thought. I had trust until it was shattered, once. Then again. Ultimately, it was broken beyond hope of repair on a variety of occasions. I just had to decide on the final "final straw" and get to the point where I could risk leaving the security that I thought he provided.

That day finally came and I felt liberated. I was free of my bonds and anxious to spread my wings and prove to him and everyone else that I could fly in this world. And..I made the life I wanted for myself and my children, without ever remarrying.

It's funny how things change. He didn't stay single long. He married the "other woman" in our relationship. She's extremely jealous and controlling and when she says "JUMP" he says "HOW HIGH HONEY?" And...she's older and kinda ugly. Not that I am bitter. Seriously.

Yes, I've seen it at family functions that she can't avoid, like the kid's graduations, weddings, and the birth of our grand kids. I always get a little perverse pleasure out of seeing the 360 degree change in him as a result of her and her behavior.

Jealousy Pictures, Images and Photos

How jealous is she you ask? She's so jealous that when my children wanted to cuddle with their daddy during a weekend visit she'd worm her way in and stop it. My children hated her for interfering in their attempts to hug their dad and he didn't have the huevos to stand up to her and tell her to knock it off. It happened over and over again.

So, one day when the kids returned from a visit with him and they were particularly upset at her jealousy and attempts to stop them from having any physical or close contact with their father, I called him on the telephone and let him have it. I told him how upset our children were and how spineless I thought he'd become allowing someone to control him in that manner and I said, "NOW YOU KNOW HOW BAD I HAD IT!"

He replied something that I've never forgotten, saying, "Honey, YOU NEVER had it THIS BAD!!!" I burst out laughing at the absurdity of it all.

And on this important date, which WOULD have been my 37th wedding anniversary I say....

Sometimes single is good!

single is good Pictures, Images and Photos

To State the Obvious.....I have......

issues Pictures, Images and Photos

So, right NOW...this very second....I am having serious co-dependent ISSUES; worrying about things that I can't control.

Oh yeah; things that haven't happened.

Things that may NOT happen!

Catastrophes of gigantic proportions.

Things that aren't really my business, but may have a ripple effect on my fragile sense of serenity.

But, the good thing is I am recognizing what's happening and trying to calm myself down. I keep reminding myself to breathe...and inhale every time I exhale. Simple I know, but some of us need help with those basic principles of sustaining life when we feel compelled to squeeze the living daylights out of the universe in an attempt to control the spin of the axis.

Yesterday, all was right with the world. Brooke Burke was declared the Champion on Season 7's Dancing with the Stars and I was thoroughly engrossed in the book Twilight absolutely lovin' me some teenage vampire and riding high and proud, having had the "talk" with Ab and her boyfriend about how it's now time for him to move in with his family now that they're convieniently living in our town.

Big Banana Pictures, Images and Photos

Since I used to be able to negotiate a banana from a monkey, I didn't think it was going to be too hard to break this news to the two of them, and I am sure they knew it was coming. How could they NOT?

So they were loaded for bear and they really tried to work on my guilt and rescue tendencies with compelling stories and comments on how dysfunctional the entire family is; how the Grandpa is crazy even though he's dying of cancer..which may contribute to that craziness...I would think, and how he won't allow his grandson to move back in, etc.

Then of course, there's the lack of room since his mother moved in with the grandparents and how his mom's eventually going to get her own place as soon as she gets her settlement that's to arrive any day now, for the multiple faulty pacemakers that she's had implanted and replanted. And so it went, on and on and on. But, I held my ground, with understanding and sympathy, and by reinforcing my belief and support of the young man my daughter loves. Firmly, but gently I made it clear that he needs to move on within the next two or three weeks, max.

Today....I am awakened abrubtly once again, by Ab, who tells me that she's at the local hospital's Emergency Room, (which is never a good place to be if you're really sick in this small town).....with her boyfriend and his mom. This morning his mom had a horrific asthma attack, probably from all that moving and the rainy weather and is in pretty bad shape with a blood pressure reading of 60/30.

I dunno, as I am not a medical professional but that doesn't sound good to me, especially considering her laundry list of medical issues.

Of course, I know I sometimes have a tendency to think the worst in those types of situations.

So, I am praying and sending out positive energy for her as she battles this medical crisis, in between my moments of panic!

I seriously need some dark chocolate and maybe a brown paper bag in which to breathe.

(An Update: The boyfriend's mom was released from the hospital at about 4:00 pm, all is well...so far!)

And I thought I had nothing to write about today....

president bush Pictures, Images and Photos

President Bush dropped by Ft. Campbell today and MY SON, a KIOWA (OH 58) HELICOPTER PILOT, serving proudly with the 101st Airborne shook the PRESIDENT's hand!!!

101st airborne Pictures, Images and Photos

He's so proud as he's a staunch Republican! I guess he's washed his hands since then as he was bathing my grandson when he was telling his sister about the big moment of nearly giving the poor man a heart attack when he yelled......"HEY, MR. PRESIDENT!" as W walked by! The President stopped, turned looked right in his eyes, and smiled as he shook FlyBoy's hand!

Regardless of your politics...that's a pretty cool thing in a young soldier's life!

Anyway...here's a transcript from the big event!

President Bush Visits Fort Campbell
Fort Campbell, Kentucky

11:13 A.M. CST

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Please be seated -- unless, of course, you don't have a seat. (Laughter.) I am honored to be here at Fort Campbell. (Applause.) I'm honored to be with the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne -- (applause) -- the Night Stalkers of the 160th -- (applause) -- the Green Berets of the 5th Special Forces Group -- (applause) -- all members of the Fort Campbell community. (Applause.) You are part of the finest military in the world. I have one word for you: Hooah! (Applause.)

I also bring greetings -- I also bring greetings from another man named Bush -- America's only skydiving President. (Laughter.) He said, pass on these two words: Air Assault! (Applause.)

In recent weeks, this post has been the scene of heartwarming family reunions. Many of you recently finished deployments to Iraq. You performed with courage and distinction on the front lines of the war on terror. You have returned on success. On behalf of a grateful nation, I'm proud to welcome home the "Bastogne" Brigade, the "Strike" Brigade, the "Rakkasan" Brigade -- (applause.) Job well done.

I want to thank General Townsend for his service. I'm proud to be with his wife, Melissa. I thank General Schloesser's wife, Patty. I appreciate Maria McConville. I want to thank Theresa Vail. These women represent the military families who have sacrificed just like our military has. On behalf of an incredibly grateful nation, I extend our heartfelt thanks and our respect to the military families here on Fort Campbell. (Applause.)

I thank Governor Beshear, who is with us, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. I want to thank the two Congress folks that represent this important base -- Congressman Ed Whitfield from Kentucky, Congressman Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee. I also want to thank Congressman Zach Wamp from Tennessee, as well, for joining us.

I appreciate all the local and state officials who are here today. I particularly want to point out one person -- Staff Sergeant John [sic] Forbess. I had the honor of meeting John [sic] at the base of Air Force One. He was severely wounded in a helicopter crash in Iraq in 2003. Yet, despite his wounds, he volunteers in the Fisher House.

I'm proud of those of you who not only serve our nation by wearing a fabulous uniform, but serve our nation by feeding the hungry, and providing home -- houses for the homeless, for loving your neighbor just like you like to be yourself -- just like Sergeant Forbess has done.

I want to thank very much those who made this event happen. I mean, it's not easy to host the President. (Laughter.) Thanks for coming out.

You know, we're getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving. I'm looking forward to it. (Applause.) The day before my first Thanksgiving as your President, guess where I was.

AUDIENCE MEMBER: Right here!

THE PRESIDENT: Right here at Fort Campbell. (Applause.) For those of you who weren't here, I can only say that watching a bunch of Screaming Eagles tear into turkey is quite a sight. (Laughter.)

That Thanksgiving came shortly after the worst terrorist attack in our nation's history. The war in Afghanistan had just begun -- the "Rakkasans" were the first conventional brigade to join the battle. (Applause.) That November day, I said, "Once again, you have a Rendezvous With Destiny." And today, there is no doubt that you have upheld this motto -- you have done your duty, and you have defended the United States of America. (Applause.)

Over the past seven years, folks from this base have done exactly what they were trained to do. The Screaming Eagles, the Night Stalkers, the Fifth Special Forces Group have gone on the offense in the war against these killers and thugs. You have taken the battle of the terrorists overseas so we do not have to face them here in the United States. (Applause.) You have helped counter the hateful ideology of tyranny and terror with a more hopeful vision of justice and liberty. You're part of the great ideological struggle of our time. With the soldiers of Fort Campbell out front, the forces of freedom and liberty will prevail. (Applause.)

The war on terror, the war against people who would do us harm again, is being waged on two main fronts -- Afghanistan and Iraq. In Afghanistan, we removed an oppressive regime that harbored the terrorists who planned the attacks that killed 3,000 folks on September the 11th, 2001. Because of our men and women in uniform, more than 25 million Afghans are free. Afghanistan is a democracy, an ally in the war on terror. And as a result of your courage, the American people are safer.

In the recent weeks, the members of the "Thunder" Brigade have begun deploying to Afghanistan for a new mission. You will replace the "Wings of Destiny" Brigade -- and join a powerful coalition of forces, including the "Currahees," members of the "Life Liners." You'll join Major General Schloesser and his Division Headquarters. Together, you will help the people of Afghanistan defend their young democracy. Together, you will ensure that a noble goal is achieved -- that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for those who want to plot and kill American citizens.

The other main front in the war on terror is Iraq. In that country, we removed a dictator who murdered his own people, paid the families of suicide bombers, who threatened America's security. As the regime crumbled, the dictator's sons tried to run and hide. They could not hide from the United States military. They met their fate in Mosul at the hands of the Screaming Eagles. (Applause.)

Because we acted, the dictator, his sons, and their regime are no more. More than 25 million Iraqis are free. And a young democracy has taken root where a tyrant once ruled. Removing Saddam Hussein was the right decision then -- and it is the right decision today. (Applause.)

With Saddam gone from power, our mission turned to helping the Iraqi people defend their freedom against violent extremists, including al Qaeda. In 2006, our efforts were faltering. So I reviewed our strategy and changed course. Instead of retreating, I ordered more troops into Iraq. And to lead the surge, I chose a former commanding general of the 101st Airborne -- the man formerly known as Eagle Six, General David Petraeus. (Applause.)

Our troops conducted this surge with resolve and with valor -- and nobody knows the impact better than the Screaming Eagles. When the "Bastogne" Brigade deployed to Salah al-Din last year, the province was still struggling to recover from the bombing of the famous Golden Mosque. But you partnered with the Iraqis to restore security. Schools and businesses are now open. The Golden Mosque is being rebuilt. Throughout the province, hope is returning; the terrorists are being driven out. The Iraqi people have the Screaming Eagles to thank.

Across Iraq, the surge has produced similar results. Since the surge began, violence and sectarian killings have fallen dramatically. Iraqi security forces have taken responsibility for 13 out of Iraq's 18 provinces. Slowly but steadily, economic and political progress is taking place. Iraqis are working together for a more hopeful future.

As conditions on the ground continue to improve, we will further reduce American combat forces in Iraq -- it's a strategy I call "return on success." So far, we've brought home a Marine Expeditionary Unit, two Marine battalions, six Army brigades without replacement -- including the Rakkasans. And by the end of January, we'll have brought home more than 4,000 additional troops.

As conditions on the ground continue to improve, we're also making progress toward completing a strategic framework agreement and a security agreement with the Iraqi government. These landmark agreements will pave the way for a future of economic and diplomatic and military cooperation between our two countries. Iraqi lawmakers in Baghdad are now debating these agreements through the democratic process. It's a good sign that Iraq has become a strong and vigorous democracy -- and it's a testament to the success of our men and women in uniform. The war in Iraq is not over. But we're drawing closer to the day when our troops can come home. And when they come home, they will come home in victory. (Applause.)

The work you have done and are going to do is historical work. You see, the consequences of success in Iraq will resonate far beyond that country's borders, and will resonate when your children and grandchildren begin to study the history of peace. Success will frustrate Iran's ambitions to dominate the region. Success will show millions across the Middle East that a future of liberty and democracy is possible. Success will deny al Qaida a safe haven for launching new attacks. Success in Iraq will mean that the American people are more secure at home.

In Iraq, Afghanistan, and beyond, our men and women in uniform have done everything we have asked of them and more. You've earned the thanks of every American.

You know, this is going to be my last Thanksgiving as President. Sometimes I am asked what I will miss most about the job. Well, above all, I'm going to miss spending time with men and women who have volunteered to serve the United States of America, the fine men and women who wear the uniform. We are blessed to have defenders of such character and courage. I'm grateful to the families who serve by your side. And I will always be thankful for the honor of having served as the Commander-in-Chief. (Applause.)

So Laura and I wish you and your families a safe and happy Thanksgiving. We join you in praying for our troops spending the holiday far from home. We pray for those who've been wounded in battle, and for all who love and care for them. We hold in our thoughts and prayers the brave men and women who have given their lives, and the families who mourn for them. We ask the Almighty to watch over everyone who puts on the uniform, and has volunteered to serve this great land.

It's an honor to be with you today. May God bless you, and may God continue to bless the United States of America. (Applause.)

Unconscious Mutterings

lword-unconscious Pictures, Images and Photos

There's a blog or a feature on a blog called Unconscious Mutterings that I found and can't find right now to provide a link-where they give you a list of words and you are supposed to provide the first thing that comes to mind. This is like maybe what you'd do in a visit to the psychiatrist so he'd figure out how really crazy you are. Here's mine for this week...or was it last week? I dunno... because I saved it on here as a draft, which is a pretty cool feature...for times like this when I don't have anything else remotely interesting to write about.

And...really, I am just killing some time while Tam decides if she's going to need me to take her 45 miles down the mountain to the county Emergency Room, since the nice understanding lady who answers the phone at her Doctor's Office and certainly a medical expert in her own right, (but who actually did consult with a nurse after Tam objected to her interference)...said to go TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM with her chest pain, instead of coming in to see them for a problem that's been going on for years and for which they decided to give her nitro and refer her to a cardiologist YESTERDAY.

Arrgggggggghhhh!!!

Somehow these little phrases seem appropriate today after all.

  1. Please stop : NOW!
  2. Move over : Damn it!
  3. Sweet as : Pie!
  4. Bet : ME!
  5. Mad about : YOU!
  6. It’s over : now!
  7. Intend to : change!
  8. Blame : ME!
  9. Jefferson : Starship!
  10. Heartless : Beast!

A Day in the Life............

It's been one of those quiet, lazy, slovenly Sundays. I loved it. Never feeling particularly inspired to write; I just read for awhile, then took a nap. I am resting up for tomorrow when I have to start the big walking adventure that I promised myself I'd do in my Letter to Myself.

Exercise. YIKES.

So, I am still sitting here in my jammies and haven't cracked the front door for so much as a breath of fresh air all day. We may have to do that now, since we had a restaurant-type dinner consisting of grilled fish and greasy, extra cheesy patty melts!

Oh yeah, like that goes together.

For those of you who don't understand what I mean by restaurant style...it's basically this; the good mom who's finally going to cook for the deprived family, takes orders and cooks, in a kinda what-ever-you-want-mama-loves-you style.

We all had very yummy patty melts with a choice of Pepperjack or American Cheese or a combo of each, and/or onions. Tam decided she'd have a little grilled fish to go along with it, satisfying her craving for Red Lobster?!

Yes. That's her kind of logic.

Well, thankfully, she grilled the hamburger patties before the fish on our handy-dandy Emeril Grill while I did the rest, but now she's complaining about how the house smells. Seriously? What does she know? It smells way better than skunk weed odor I've had to endure around this place lately!

So, this morning, I was awakened with a start for the 2nd day in a row, as the girl child came in to tell me she was once again off with her boyfriend and his mom to help her move! TO OUR TOWN! Maybe her son will once again resume living there, now that his mom and grandparents are both going to be living within a few miles of us. One can only hope!

I take that back.
He's going to be moving in with them just as soon as they get settled, considering there's no further need for him to stay here.

Genius. I know!

How he got here to begin with is another story in the "Rescue" files, but suffice it to say, he was about to be homeless, while living with his previous girlfriend's family. Since Ab is such a good friend with a mom who tends to rescue people and stray animals, Ab decided to ask me if he could stay in our guest room until he got a job and an apartment.

Soooooo.......yes, I said, "Of course, honey!" instead of "Gee, that's really too bad he's in such a predicament!" and he's been here since August and is NOW, Abbie's boyfriend.

Funny how those things happen, huh.

I think I should'a had Remo call with some parenting advice before making that decision. He's just sooo good at that.

Sometimes I am just so stupid for someone who used to be so damn smart.

Give my regards to Broadway.........

If you LOVE to write (that's pretty much why we're all here, right?) and can use some ideas to spark your waning creativity, you really, REALLY need to check out One-Minute Writer! She's got about 2000 followers and she gets about a gazillion comments as people use her daily writing "prompts" and then frantically try to bang out a response in one minute, with her timer ticking away!

The pressure's on PEOPLE!!! Get over there and try it!

Here's one from the other day that I've expanded upon here. Yeah, I used more than a minute on this one........so sue me!

broadway lights Pictures, Images and Photos

A new Broadway musical is about your life. Come up with a title for the big show, and write a mini-review of it.

Don't FIX the Guillotine! is a rousing comedy of side-splitting moments following the seemingly 'normal' life of a struggling, co-dependent single mom, who swears she'd fix the guillotine if it malfunctioned as it was being used to put her out of her misery.

The play's main character really hasn't cornered the market on agony, as she truly manages to make the most of her life without being anesthetized by alcohol or drugs, unlike her immediate family members. She succumbs only to the occasional glass of Reisling wine, which tends to make her burst into tears at the overwhelming cuteness of a Pamper's commercial.

How fun is that? Imagine her on a date?

A favorite scene was watching the main character's pathetic rant about the sickening stench of "skunk weed" permeating her house as the teenaged daughter returns from an evening out, screaming..."Don't they have vanilla scented marijuana?" and requiring all "bud smokers" to use Febreeze on their clothing before returning anywhere near her home. How's that for detachment, with LOVE!

Finally, the star offers audience members free copies of a variety of self-help books she's got on hand, because she's got duplicates; recognises your problems and kindly wants to help fix them.

And...just in case you have a problem getting to the show...like, no child care? She's offering to pay the babysitter's fees for the night! Why would you NOT want to go with that kind of entertaining help available?

Consider it therapy...without the immediate feedback!

See you there!

Spirituality and Creativity-The Artist's Way

Recently I picked up a second-hand copy of the book, The Artist's Way, Tenth Anniversary Edition, by Julia Cameron. The author says it's a spiritual path to higher creativity; a course in "Discovering and Recovering Your Creative Self."

I recall all the chatter about the book when it was first released years ago, but surprisingly, I didn't feel compelled to buy it and add it to the already bulging shelves of self-help books in my library. Maybe because I already had taken the liberty of referring to myself as an "artist" in a Been there...Done that, sorta way!

After all, I'd been artistic all my life. I still have really fond memories of the wonder and smell of a new box of 64 Crayola Crayons and the possibilities of stark white butcher paper!

crayons Pictures, Images and Photos

An old family story used to be told about how when I was just a tot, I discovered that a straight pin made the perfect object for carving fascinating hieroglyphics in the dark wood finish of the headboard on my bed. That interesting fact alone should make the Cave Man recognise my abilities at being the proper Cave Woman! LOL!

Julia Cameron says that creativity is a spiritual experience, and it doesn't matter which way you think of it: creativity leading to spirituality or spirituality leading to creativity. I like that. It works for simple minded me and I can easily wrap my creative brain around that concept.

The author talks about how critics have silenced our creative dreams. She says our creative artist is an inner youngster, and prone to childish thinking. If people along the way expressed doubt or disapproved of our dreams to make a living as an artist, or to just pursue an education in the arts; that attitude becomes a belief and stymies our creative growth.

Joseph Chilton Pearce is quoted in the book saying; To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong.

I don't think I ever had any critics when it came to the various art forms I have chosen over the years to express my creative side, but I must have somewhere along the way. Maybe my mom did get pissed off when she found my expressive drawings on the headboard, but I sure don't recall getting in any trouble back then. That almost makes me feel sort of warm and fuzzy toward her!

And, my maternal Great Grandmother apparently recognised some potential in my crayon scribbles, because she left me about $2000 and a few shares of telephone stock to pursue art school, which I didn't do. But, I did take private Oil Painting Classes at different times in my adult life, so I didn't really screw off the money. Another plus, I still have the stocks!

But, I often have that fear of my art being WRONG as I jump whole-heartedly into being my own worst critic. It doesn't matter what art form I am dabbling in at the time....writing, painting, photography or the subsequent digital art that my photo edits may morph into; light years away from the original photograph, like the flowers above.

That feeling of not being "good enough" in comparison to others who also call themselves writers, artists, or photographers can be extremely disheartening. But, it's something I continue to work on and I am making some progress.

I've joined various photography groups, where I've displayed my work and received inspiring comments, and helpful critiques. This particular photo, turned "art" entitled, Holding My Hurting Heart, was honored by one of my groups with the "Best Effort" award by the moderators who are all incredible photographers in their own right.

Photobucket

Recently, I thought some of my photography "good enough" to enter into various contests and I was elated to find one of my photos published in the Capture Music City photography project, sponsored by the Tennesseean newspaper. Out of approximately 22, 600 photos submitted for consideration, ONE of mine was among the 224 or so selected to be published in the book!

The funny thing is...the photo that was selected for the project, was probably one of my least favorites out of the 20 or so that I submitted for consideration. Which just brings us to that old adage...Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder!

What the ---- do I know? What made me think that particular photo might be wrong? Because I am an amateur? Because I don't yet know how to play photographer with the BIG BOYS?

All I had to do was try and leave the results up to the Creator. I am now reaping the benefits of risking and growing as an artist and photographer.

I am looking forward using some of the lessons from The Artist's Way to improve my writing skills. While I'd love to be as funny as Remo or Ryak in my journal entries someday, I know will probably never compare. But, I am going to keep trying whether or not my internal critic begins telling me how WRONG it is....because, just maybe, there are people who don't read Remo and Ryak, who'll think I rock! (But, I don't know why they wouldn't read Remo and Ryak! Get goin' people!)

And the best thing of all, is when you get a comment from someone who can make a train wreck with casualties funny.... like Remo, who leaves a comment on one of your entries saying, "You crack me up!"

**beaming smile**

Thanks Remo! YOU ROCK!!!

Be Careful or You'll End Up in My Next Blog Entry!

As IF you couldn’t tell, this week pretty much sucked, despite my attempts to keep my mood light-hearted with an entry on those endearing quirks of mine. That kick in the pants Letter to Me was helpful though. I actually found my self accomplishing a few things today and even singing along with the radio a time or two. Not singing well, but enjoying myself nonetheless.

Dark Side Pictures, Images and Photos

Sometimes we depressive types use any excuse we can find to withdraw into that disturbing DARK SIDE of ourselves. Having always enjoyed my own fascinating company, it’s not hard to seek out a reason and relish that time of self-indulgence, and reflection in a fluffy, warm bed. Besides, we have chocolate on the Dark Side and well, they know me there. I‘ve been a regular visitor over the past few years.

But, it’s really starting to get old and I’d much rather spend time happily doing other things than pulling the covers up over my head, and watching a fictional “LOVE Story” that I’ve written, take place in living color on a screen in my misfiring brain.

its a love story. Pictures, Images and Photos

I had to laugh at my friend Lisa’s comment on my Letter to Me entry where she said, “I take it the weekend date with Mr. Possible Prince Charming didn't go too well…”

Actually, I thought it went fantastically well and therein lies the problem!

The Would Be Prince Charming, who will now be referred to as my Cave Man Friend-and I have known each other for many years; beginning back when he was drop-dead gorgeous Sergeant in his SERT (SWAT) uniform providing outstanding motivation and “Leadership” training to a group of us SERT and Negotiation Team Leaders.

swat Pictures, Images and Photos

I was the young, cute and disgustingly skinny Lieutenant in charge of my facility’s Negotiation Team and there to learn, but I think I remained totally distracted by being Hot for Teacher, and mesmerized by his every word during that week. Even if I weren’t the somewhat puritanical woman I’ve been my whole life, and was inclined to pursue him…he admittedly wouldn’t have given me a tumble, considering SERT his “mistress.”

nego Pictures, Images and Photos

But, as luck would have it a couple years later, we ended up spending a few days conducting an audit at a facility down South, where we spent some time hanging out after work. We walked, talked and shared dinners in an amazingly comfortable way. I felt an immediate emotional connection, like finding a new best friend.

He’d later tell me that he felt the same connection and that’d I’d given him a glimpse of how “easy” a relationship could be with the right person (That admission led to at least part of my screenplay), considering his disastrous marriage which had just been complicated by the addition of a new baby. After that, we’d run into each other briefly a time or two during our careers.

Had circumstances and "timing" been a little different along the way, maybe we would have had a mad, passionate love affair and been done with it, or maybe we’d would have fallen madly in love, been together all this time and saved one another from the disturbing depths of depression we both sank into, separately-over the past 4 or 5 years. (It’s my damn love story and blog, so I’ll write it as I would have hoped it would have been!)

Or maybe………..*sigh*

Despite some long stretches of non-contact, at times one or the other would eventually reach out and we’d reconnect via email and telephone calls. Why did we continue to seek out one another? We were both single and available, but we never would take the next step.

Now?

Again?

Here we are, now retired and lonely. Both climbing out of the abyss and learning to live again or maybe learning to LIVE for the very first time. Finally. Healing. Letting go of pasts that nearly destroyed us and looking forward to a brighter future. A reality that we‘re each creating for ourselves. A major shift in consciousness.

However, we hadn’t actually seen each other in probably 15 or more years, until my recent first visit to his home/cave in October. Of course, we weren’t the sexy young things that we were way back then. Time had taken it’s toll, but I felt the connection remained as it was; just so very comfortable.

Easy. I could get used to this EASY.

I began to think that the “meant to be” script I’d written may actually ring true.

To be continued…………………

A girl can wait for the right man to come along but in the meantime that still doesn't mean she can't have a wonderful time with all the wrong ones.

If I Could Write a Letter to Me

If I Could Write a Letter to Me....is a hit country song, by Brad Paisley. In that song, he's an adult and speaks of wanting to write a letter to himself back when he was in high school...and share things he's learned about how his life would eventually turn out.

Recently, I noticed a few blogs that I follow had posted "Open Letters" that they'd written to themselves. Since I have been having a pity party of major proportions in the past few days, I wrote this to ME to give myself a swift kick in the rear!

I think it's working! :)

Dear Me,

WTF is wrong with you? Look at you! What’s happened to you?

You are a friggin’ mess. Pathetic in so many ways. Yes, I said “pathetic” because I know how much you like the truth. That’s right, p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c…and it’s about time someone gave you a serious wake-up call.

Oh yeah….for the past few months, you‘ve been on a spiritual quest…a big self-improvement kick; but who could tell by your latest pity party? What is that all about? You are on your third day of wallowing in your self-imposed misery! This one’s almost for the record books.

If you aren’t sitting around in your pajamas with tears streaming down your face, you are “taking to your bed” with that woe is me attitude. Why don’t you just velcro your wrist to your forehead?

Is that your inner-child I hear singing, “Nobody likes me, everybody HATES me, I’m gonna eat some worms?” Oh, that’s right, it’s not worms…it’s chocolate, milkshakes and fast food you’re eating. Why don’t you try some worms….they’ve probably got less calories and they’re certainly more nutritious.

How long has it been since you’ve cooked for your family? Are you proud of the fact that you’ve disconnected so much that everyone has to fend for themselves around here? What happened to that schedule that you talked about, where everyone was going to pitch in and have a night to cook and clean the kitchen? Are you so paralyzed with apathy that you can’t even do a simple schedule so you can all eat a home-cooked meal? I know, it’s just so much easier to throw a $20 at the kids and tell them to run through the drive through. What a wimp! And….you wonder why you are putting on weight!

Do you realize that you’ve nearly put on every bit of that weight that you lost last year? I know you’ve looked in the mirror lately and it’s bothering you that you are FAT! Yes, FAT! I said it even though you prefer the word “pudgy!”

Do you remember how you felt when you were thinner? You were struttin’ your sexy self! The kids were callin’ you HOT MAMA!! People didn’t even recognize you because you looked so good and of course, you weren’t isolating yourself then! You were so faithful about your diet journal, and exercising! You love to walk! What happened? Is it that isolation crap again? You don’t want anyone to see you? More of that stupid self-pity because you are aging, and you’ve let yourself go?

Vanity…Thy Name is Woman!

You know you look pretty damn good for a woman your age, and you can look better, if you do your part. Get busy! Get going on that exercise! YOU are retired for God’s sake! You can’t say you don’t have the time! In fact, I think part of your problem is you have too much time on your hands. Don’t you?

Didn’t you just buy a treadmill? You don’t have a single excuse for NOT exercising! Yeah…I know you live in the mountains and it’s Winter. That’s why God made coats, hats and gloves. If the weather’s nice, you can go for a walk and who knows…you may find some great photo ops while you’re out. Or, you can listen to some of that music on your fancy new iPod. You’ve got an incredible music library on that thing. Surely you can find some motivating music to get you going! And… you can use it while you walk on the treadmill if it’s cold outside. Didn’t you put that treadmill in a place where it can easily be put in position to see the television while you’re walking on it? Puhlease!!! Get moving!

And…..while you are at it, how about doing a little housework! Housework is exercise and just getting this filthy place in shape will lift your spirits.

Good Lord woman, can you even kick your way through your messy bedroom? No wonder you want to stay in bed! I bet you just can’t stand how incredibly nasty you’ve let this house become! Yes, it’s your fault! You have four people living here; 2 adults and 2 that are nearly adults. A few years ago this place was always spotless! A little cluttered at times, but clean!!!

Where’s your backbone? Can you provide some boundaries and expectations for those slovenly people that are living in your home? Sometimes I find it hard to believe you worked in a prison for 25 years and were so successful. Like Papa used to say…“Would you put up with that shit from an inmate?” NO? Well, then why do you let your kids walk all over you and mess up your beautiful home? What about that chart?? Remember? That was agreed upon by all involved and you just failed to get it done. Say what you mean…and mean what you say! It’s not that damn complicated.

Oh, and I totally understand that you are approaching that milestone birthday in a few weeks and you‘re feeling a little “old!” Well, you are a very youthful 55, and besides, 55 is not that old! You need to quit yer bellyaching as two of your sisters didn’t make it to age 40! So, why don’t you try being a little more grateful for attaining that age and having a wonderful retirement income! There’s lots of people out there who are still working for a living and you’ve got all this time to finally do what you want in life and instead you are sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. Isolating yourself, again. Do you see how absolutely absurd that is?

Yes, I know you want to find a soul mate; someone who’ll be loving, kind and giving. Like you. Yes, you are a wonderful woman and would make a great lover and wife and that person is out there, somewhere! You thought maybe your Would-Be Prince Charming would be that “someone.” But, he’s made it clear that he’s not interested in anything more than being friends. He’s being "careful" and not open to a “relationship” at this point in his life. Yes…it’s too bad. His loss. But…damn it…does he need to bust you upside of the head with a 2x4 to get that through your thick head?

Remember when you were in high school and you had a crush on Cathy Cave’s brother and you let him know it? He wrote in your yearbook, “Forget it Lisa, it’s not going to happen!” It’s pretty much just like that here. What part of NO don’t you understand?

balance Pictures, Images and Photos

He said you’d be much "more attractive" to the right person, when there’s more “balance” in your life. Which is probably a pretty nice way of saying you’re kind of a mess right now Lisa. So…get to balancing!

You know…..there’s so much more I could say right now…but I think I’ve beat you up enough for now. I am sure you know that I love you and I am doing this in that spirit of love. You really need to get your shit together Lisa!

Let’s set a couple of goals to get started. Tomorrow, you’ll make those kitchen charts. That’s an easy one, right? Monday, you’ll start exercising again! You can start out slow. Let’s say a half-hour walk outdoors or on the treadmill.

Baby steps darlin’.

Deal?

Deal!

You‘ll be just fine! Trust me! I am here for ya!

Love,

Me

Broken-Thematic Photography

Carmi at Written, Inc. has a weekly Thematic Photography segment in his blog. I happened upon it today and like some of his other followers, I decided to play along with this week's theme of "Broken."

I love photography! It's my latest passion in life! I'd say I am a "self-learner" rather than self-taught as I have a long way to go, especially when it comes to the mechanics of photography. I've yet to try my hand at the manual settings on the camera due to fear that I'd never, ever get the camera back to the default settings. But, I'll tell you a little secret! The newer cameras..like mine, have a button to push that will automatically reset your camera to the default settings, so there's really no excuse to be scared!

When I am busy taking photos, regardless of the environment, or in the process of editing them, I find that I lose all sense of time, because I'm truly living in the moment. It's a wonderful escape!

I love the fact that at times, a photo can really speak a 1000 words! I had to dig through some of my old photos to find one fitting for this week's theme, but came upon this one which I think works.....

When my (late) father was hospitalized a few years ago, I brought him this vase of flowers and the cute little Nun statue and placed them on his window sill. When I returned to visit the next day, I discovered that the white carnation-the only carnation-in the midst of those yellow daisies, was broken. I don't know how it happened, but I found it beautiful in its own way and snapped this photo.

Of all the family I've lost in this life...four years later, I am still broken at the loss of my wonderful father.

Flyin' My Freak Flag Proudly

Freak Flag Pictures, Images and Photos

My new Blogger friends, Frankie and Bella, who are identical twins and cobloggers from Australia; which is pretty dern special in itself-did an entry yesterday in which they posted some, well...oddities about themselves, entitled Flying Your Freak Flag.

They asked their readers about little quirks that they may have; the kind that make you somewhat neurotic, a little freaky or just plain uniquely YOU! You know…endearing stuff. The stuff that makes your teenager want to divorce your creepy ass because, let's face it you are just too bizarre.

It brought to mind a nifty Al-Anon sayin'...."You are only as sick as your secrets!" which got me to thinkin' how really special I am. My endearing quirks are probably pretty mild, in comparison to some people...like maybe Remo's...but I think they make for good blogging and I'd like to "share."

I reveal these oddities with great risk, knowing all too well that my Would Be Prince Charming may never again invite me to his safe haven, as he already has seen me drink one glass of wine and break into considerable sobs while we watched What Dreams May Come, with Robin Williams. I think he found me beyond hope at that point, with "ISSUES!" :)

Dear God! I thought Robin Williams only did comedies, but I am not "well read" when it comes to movies. I can get emotional all over again just thinking about that film as the whole damn family died! I am such a girl........

But, back to the task at hand.........

Hippie fly swatter! Pictures, Images and Photos

Flies: Yes, your garden variety, household black flies. I cannot and will not sleep or even be able to handle being in a small room with a FLY or Flies! I had a recurring dream when I was little, about being in a small room, with no doors and no windows, with a continual buzzing that I believe was a fly. It may have been a bee, who knows, but I've found it's much more likely that one would have a fly in the room, than a bee. It's my freaky nightmare, so I've chosen the antagonist to be an annoying and terrifying fly whose BUZZing gets increasing louder when I struggle to find my way outta the room. The horror!!! Anyway, I once broke a globe on the bathroom light in my master bath while chasing a fly with a towel; finally killing it so I could get some sleep!

chapstick Pictures, Images and Photos

Chapstick-Since I was old enough to provide for myself, I been addicted to Chapstick. SERIOUSLY addicted. The store brand will sometimes do, but for the purposes of this journal, we'll call it Chapstick. I must have Chapstick with me at all times! If I am not wearing lipstick, then I must have Chapstick on my lips. I probably have the softest lips in town because I use it constantly and will even put it on my lips in the middle of the night, if I happen to wake up. There's one in my nightstand, one in my purse, one on my desk and if I go for a walk without my purse, I will put a Chapstick in my pocket. If for some unGodly reason I wouldn't have access to my Chapstick, I would begin to panic and would have to go to the nearest drugstore or handy 7-11, to pick up a new one. After that I would regain my composure. I know...they have meds for that kind of behavior.

Dirty Hands Pictures, Images and Photos

Dirty Hands-I HATE MY HANDS TO BE DIRTY!! I mean dirt..dirty or greasy dirty. ICK! I dunno, but maybe my neurotic mother or grandmother used to wash my hands a little too often when I was a kid. (I am also somewhat germophobic, but that's the next paragraph) So, I pretty much don't like to use my hands mix meatloaf, grease the bottom of baking pans with butter, garden without gloves-because soil under my nails is torture-and I seriously doubt that I'd enjoy throwing a clay pot on a spinning wheel, even though I'd think I'd like to try, because it would really bother me to have my hands THAT dirty!

HAND SANITIZER Pictures, Images and Photos

Germophobic-I guess I am doing my part to ensure we as a Nation end up with supergerms, because I carry hand sanitizer and use it pretty regularly. Of course I only use it if I don't have a sink available to suitably wash my hands after touching nasty objects used by millions of people on a regular basis. Like after pumping gas, handling money, door handles or shopping carts! Albertson's has my business just because they offer free sanitizing wipes for cleaning up the shopping cart push bar, just as you walk in the building. What service!

Yes..I know that is what an immune system and positive thinking is for, but on the other side of the coin, I seldom get sick.

Finally......

bot Pictures, Images and Photos

Cotton balls: Touching a cotton ball to me, is the equivalent of someone scratching their fingernails on a chalkboard!!! UGGGGHHHH!!! I just can't stand touching a REAL cotton; like they stuff in pill bottles! The texture is just simply unbearable!!! My children think it's hysterical and love to come up to me with a cotton ball in hand and try to rub it on me!

So...If you'd ever like to torture me, just put me in a small room with padded cotton walls, just after I've pumped gas, without my Chapstick, and release a few big black flies.

I'll either create an exit, or die trying.

Oh...Him Again

WAITING FOR THE PERFECT MAN Pictures, Images and Photos

A couple of weeks ago, I ran into “Him” at the grocery store, AGAIN. It was about the 4th time in a 6 month period that we nearly crashed carts while quietly absorbed in the wonder of the vast assortment of cheese to select from in the cold case aisle of our friendly Albertson’s or while perusing Save Mart‘s meat section. Actually, this time I was coochie-cooing the adorable toddler grandson of one my Bunco partners; who I saw standing in the Express Lane, when he approached and wrapped me in a big bear hug!

I smiled in amazement at the odds of running into “Him” again in one of the two major grocery stores in our town, knowing there are really no accidents in this web of constant cosmic connections, but then discounted it with my rational side, thinking “Well, we’ve all got to eat!”

Me: “I sent you a card the other day!”

Him: “I got it today!”

Me: “Really! How about that!”

Him: “Hey, I’ve been meaning to call you about going out to dinner! How about this weekend?” he smiled enthusiastically. (I recalled hearing exactly that statement from him during our last supermarket encounter!)

Me: “Ummm. Actually, I am busy this weekend. I am going outta town! You know I mentioned in my card that I am going to Al-Anon now…learning to deal with things involving the girls…so I am taking a little time for me this weekend and visiting a friend up North! I am really starting to enjoy life and my retirement!” I said sincerely with a big smile.

Of course, I am not stoooopid-I didn’t mention that the friend I was going to see was my would-be Prince Charming who surprisingly had invited me back for a second weekend visit at his safe haven. And…I began to feel pretty damn smug that there were TWO men who seemed interested in my fabulous company in the same weekend and I was turning one down!) “Life just keeps getting better and better!” I said.

Him: “Well…How about next weekend? Let’s plan on next weekend. Will that work?”

Me: “Sure,” I said, “Give me a call!” He said he’d call, then kissed me on the cheek as we said our quick goodbyes and I walked away a little lighter on my feet thinking I was doing alright for a pudgy woman who was nearly 55 years old.

Feast or famine? It was my turn for a feast! You know…the…So many men…so little time stuff! I hadn’t felt this good since I paid eHarmony to send me tons of so-called “compatible singles” like dick, yes dick…not Capital D-Dick….just dick……that I could turn down without even a word. Just a click of the mouse and dick…….and his friends were gone! GAWD….how I hated the whole internet dating stuff and I’ve vowed to NEVER, ever do that again.

It was wonderful to consider that the two single men now sorta interested in my company were actually compatible in my book. I previously worked with both and we’d achieved the same success in our careers and we were all once extremely passionate about our work. It’s nice to have someone in your life who understands that part of you that can get excited about placing someone in handcuffs (get your mind outta the gutter), large riots and the aroma of OC pepper spray permeating from some tough guy in a holding cell, who’s now crying like a big baby because he’s been thoroughly doused for some bonehead decision he elected to make. Seems like we never grow tired of “war stories” even though we’re all retired now.

Both men are the type that know how to treat a lady and are easy to just “be” with in that comfortable, “old shoe” sort of way. They’re good conversationalists, well read, and good writers. They’re handsome, manly men with their own interests, who wouldn’t deny a woman theirs. And having worked in the same business, they can appreciate my accomplishments as I do theirs, and they aren’t intimidated by any of it.

I could rattle on and on about the merits of both, but my would-be Prince Charming reads this blog sometimes and he might get the idea that I kinda like him.

Nothing could be further from the truth. **rolls eyes**

Nope, I am keeping my options open and am relying on lessons learned about expectations. “Expectations are just future disappointments in the making” said my wise therapist recently.

While I would like to expect that Mr. Grocery Shopper would have called like he said he would, I didn‘t for a minute have any expectations that he would do so…. as he said that before. I also know that past behavior is an indication of future behavior. So when he didn’t call by Wednesday or Thursday to make plans for our dinner date this weekend…I made mine. I was busy, busy, busy and thoroughly productive as well.

It's Sunday afternoon and he still hasn’t called. Not that I thought he meant Sunday as part of the "weekend" anyway.

I’ve decided to take those cosmic connections in the grocery store as another lesson or… two….. that I needed to have reinforced.

I’m shopping elsewhere.

California's Proposition 8

If you get a chance to spend a few minutes here, watch this amazing commentary by Keith Olbermann on California's Proposition 8, which was rejected by a vote of about 52% AGAINST an amendment to allow same-sex couples the legal right to marry in our great State.

Ellen Degeneres has been talking about Keith's incredible opinion on the matter during her show, and one of my fellow bloggers just added it in a recent entry so I took a gander. I was mesmerized at his passion, clarity and common-sense and I couldn't agree more. So, I decided to post it here as well.

I'm not gay and wouldn't have the slightest interest in a romantic/sexual relationship with someone of my gender. But, I have some gay friends, gay family members and know lots of former co-workers who are gay too. (One of my biggest crushes EVER was on a man that I worked with that eventually came out of the closet as a gay man! I was crushed.) I have friends who have gay children and gay siblings. It doesn't diminish them a bit in my eyes. They color my world..so to speak..with all the colors of the rainbow! :) In fact, as my late Grandmother used to say...."Isn't it wonderful that we aren't all alike, because it would be one b-o-r-i-n-g world if we were."

So it just flat out amazes me that people would be that damn caught up in preventing two people who love each other, who just happen to be of the same sex from getting married, when as Keith said...we heterosexuals haven't been all that successful in the marriage department, with 50/50 odds of divorce.

The older I get, the more I realize that LOVE is all that really matters in this life. We all want to love and be loved in return!

I am nearly 55 years old and I'm wanting to experience a new loving relationship and eventually marry that special guy so we can share the rest of our lives...and damn it, if these men don't work out...I may have to look for someone fun-loving and incredibly special to marry like......Ellen Degeneres!

Really, who would want to deny me that option? ;)

Frowzy-Use it in a Sentence

Word of the Day for Saturday, November 15, 2008 from Dictionary.com
frowzy \FROW-zee\, adjective:

1. dirty and untidy; slovenly
2. smelling bad; musty

While Lisa would be very content to keep her happy, yet slovenly fanny right in front of the computer for the remainder of the day; playing Scrabble, editing photos and blogging about nonsense since she has absolutely no inspiration for an entry of any substance; she's decided to spend some time cleaning her FROWZY bedroom.

The photograph has been added to make Lisa feel that pretty trumps frowzy any day!

How would you use that word in a sentence?

Thankful Thursday

Thankful Pictures, Images and Photos

It's time to reflect on those things for which I am especially grateful!

1. Men who can cook! I am soooo very grateful for a couple of guys in my life that can cook! They can really cook GOOD, nutritious food! Right now one of those guys is grilling us ribs and he's made Strawberry Shortcake for Dessert! I am not so sure there's a lot of nutrition in shortcake, but we'll count the fruit as nutrition! YUM! Man....ummm, no pun intended.....I've been eating good lately!

2. My kids doing the BIG grocery shopping yesterday! Oh yeah, that's nice! I sat in the car and enjoyed my iPod-with all kinds of new music, thanks to a friend's extensive music collection that he recently let me copy onto my computer/iPod-while they did that drudgery. Ugghhh!

3. Modern Technology-my iPod..see above and my computer. I so love my computer and can't imagine life without it!

4. Ellen Degeneres-I just think she's one of the most fun and sincere personalities on TV and I find myself just cracking up while I watch her show! Laughter is so good for the soul!

5. Movies-Over this past weekend I enjoyed at least 4 movies, three of which I hadn't seen before and each of them touched my heart in some manner! They were, One Fine Day; with George Clooney who is so easy on the eyes, The Visitor, What Dreams May Come and Juno! I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to see those movies and relax with a dear friend while doing so!

6. A visit to Forestiere Underground Gardens with my Roadie! And....the photo ops! See previous entry!

Forestiere Underground Gardens

When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence. ~Ansel Adams

Last weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to visit Forestiere Underground Gardens, in Fresno, California, where I took the above photo of a subterranean walkway in the midst of an entire network of underground rooms in the "Garden Home" of Baldassare Forestiere, a Sicilian immigrant, who lived from 1879-1946.

The Forestiere family has owned this site for over 100 years, and it is listed by the Department of the Interior on the NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES and a CALIFORNIA REGISTERED HISTORICAL LANDMARK, NUMBER 916.

We toured this incredible maze of underground rooms, passageways, courtyards and patios, which included the living area, consisting of a kitchen, bedrooms, library and bath; built and sculpted alone, by Baldassare Forestiere over a span of 40 years (1906-1946) in which he used only hand tools.

Once this underground complex spanned 10 acres, but only 4 acres remain today and it is open to accept visitors to hear Baldassare's amazing story and marvel at his accomplishments. The gardens of old fruit trees and gnarly, thick grapevines planted by Baldassare; continue to provide fresh fruit, some of which is sold on site.

"God only knows what has kept the Gardens this long. I think if it were not for the visitors, we would not have been able to make it this far. How can one destroy or exploit the work this man has done? Can not the strength and purity of a person's work survive in our age? Certainly we, at this period of history, desperately need examples of man's simple capacity to achieve with only the mind and body God has given us."

~Lorraine Forestiere

I found the wonder of it all very inspiring! I hope you enjoy these photos and information! You can find more info at www.undergroundgardens.info
